Balada Americana Abroad
Two chamber operas about the American West by the Spanish-American composer Leonardo Balada have had their European premiere performances (September 21-30) in Madrid. The fully staged production of Hangman, Hangman! and its companion opera The Town of Greed was presented by the Teatro de la Zarzuela. The twin bill is also scheduled for performances in November at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona.
Spain is not the only country to feature Balada vignettes of Americana. His A Little Night Music in Harlem is due for its world premiere in Budapest by the Hungarian Chamber Symphony Orchestra and the Concerto for Three Cellos and Orchestra has been given its world premiere by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin.
